Dusen Dusen Collab
I met Ellen Van Dusen in March of this year when I was in New York for the Architectural Digest Home Show. We had been Instagram buddies for few months prior, but there had been no official contact until she stopped by the home show.
It's one of those weird things that's becoming more and more common, where you begin to follow someones work through Instagram, and you pay attention to their work, and it becomes part of your daily inspiration simply by opening up that little app on your phone. In a very direct way you begin to interact with this person's work almost daily. And so it was, that when Ellen and I actually met in real life we were able to hit the ground running, because there was already a level of familiarity.
The abbreviated version is basically: We introduced ourselves. Nice to meet you. Nice to meet you. Hey we should collaborate sometime. Ok. Ok! I've got this thing coming up in May.... And it happened that quickly.
I was working on a new chair design that I could incorporate fabric into. Kind of a mix between the Staycation chair and the Rod+Weave chair. The folks at Sight Unseen were initiating a series of collaborations between product designers and illustrators, with production through a service called Print All Over Me - so the whole thing debuted during NY Design Week at the OFFSITE Design Fair. The timing was perfect!
Here are the results of our collaboration that took place primarily through email, a 10 minute phone call, and a handful of text messages, all within 6 weeks:
The cushions are made from 8oz canvas produced by Print All Over Me. Cushions are reversible for different color combinations and for fun!
The fabric is a design from Dusen's Spring '14 Collection - Objects Print.
